Thinking about Canada? From today, a well-paid job offer is worth up to 100 Express Entry points
Since 3 November, Express Entry scores job offers and Canadian work experience by the occupation's median wage: 100, 70 or 50 points for an offer, up to 150 for experience. The LMIA requirement is gone. Nurses, pharmacists and software developers sit in the top band. Draws pause for up to two weeks while profiles are recalculated.
Canada changed the way it scores would-be permanent residents on Tuesday. From 3 November, Express Entry, the system behind most economic immigration to Canada, rates job offers and work experience by how well the occupation pays.
It also drops a requirement that held a lot of people back. A job offer no longer needs an LMIA, the labour market impact assessment employers used to have to obtain for the offer to count.
What a job offer is worth now
The test is not the salary you are offered. It is the occupation’s median wage compared with that of the Canadian workforce as a whole. There are three bands, and IRCC’s backgrounder on the change attaches these points to them:
- an occupation paying at least twice the overall median: 100 points;
- at least 1.5 times: 70 points;
- at least 1.3 times: 50 points.
Below 1.3 times, the offer earns nothing under this route.
People already working in Canada get a parallel scale. Twelve months in a top-band occupation adds 70 points, the middle band 40 and the entry band 20, on top of the existing points for length of experience (up to 80). Altogether, experience can reach 150 points. Candidates who qualify both ways do not stack them; they get whichever is higher. With a spouse or partner, the ceiling is 140.
Who makes the top band
IRCC has published its list of high-wage occupations, built on 2023 to 2025 wage data. The twice-the-median band includes dentists, pharmacists, software developers and registered nurses. The 1.5-times band includes architects, social workers and chemists.
From a Portuguese point of view, the nurses line is the one that jumps out. Portugal has watched nurses emigrate for years, and in Canada a qualifying offer for it now scores the maximum.
What happens this week
Profiles already in the Express Entry pool are being recalculated automatically. IRCC says that can take up to two weeks and that invitation rounds are paused in the meantime. Anyone wanting job-offer points was asked to update their profile before 3 November.
No LMIA does not mean no checks. Ottawa says it will still verify that offers are genuine, with anti-fraud measures in place.
Before you pack
Express Entry is not an open door. It is a points race against thousands of other candidates, and age, languages (English and French) and qualifications still carry a lot of weight. If you are comparing destinations, the UK moved the other way this week and doubled the standard route to settlement to ten years.
