A Learjet 60 business jet crashed into a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, killing all nine people on board. The aircraft had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s statement.
It came down at around 12:50 local time (17:50 in Lisbon) near Greenacres, beside Military Trail. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed there were no survivors and called it a horrific tragedy.
Ice, turbulence and a near-vertical drop
The pilot reported ice and turbulence, then declared an emergency. Flight data cited by ABC News show the jet falling from 35,250 feet to 8,750 feet in little more than a minute, roughly 350 feet a second, before it hit the ground nose first.
Governor Ron DeSantis said the impact left a crater by the roadside and that there were no reports of anyone hurt on the ground. About 600 people were moved out of a nearby mobile home park as a precaution, and Military Trail was shut between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North.
The jet was 22 years old and belonged to a private company that had rented it out in the past. The victims have not yet been named.
Who investigates
The National Transportation Safety Board leads the inquiry, with the FAA in support. Its preliminary report usually lands within about 30 days, and a finding on the cause can take more than a year.
Earlier this year we also covered the sightseeing plane that went down at Peru’s Nazca Lines, killing all 13 on board.
